Grand Domaine – the modern skiing region with a tradition Grand Domaine (1250-2550 m)

Original natural landscapes and real Savoyian flair characterize the sunny skiing region Grand Domaine between the Massif du Cheval Noir and the Massif de la Lauzière. Not lastly, the approximately 3600 hectar large area underneath the Col de la Madeleine owes it charm to the cosy skiing village Valmorel la Belle that was built in the seventies, but if you didn’t know you would think it would be a typical mountain village of the French Alps. Chalets from wood and stone in an authentic style were preferred to functional concrete constructions, so that Valmorel fits perfectly into the landscape. At the same time, the family-friendly skiing village offers the comfort of a modern skiing station with short paths and a complete range of service and leisure offers. The same goes for St. François-Longchamp, the second branch in the skiing region Grand Domaine, located between 1.400 and 2.500 meters altitude. Especially the ideal care offer for small winter athletes 18 months and up draws many families. The slopes come to a total of 165 kilometres, are correspondingly versatile and have something to offer for beginners, advanced, and professionals.

Not only the infrastructure of the two skiing villages Valmorel and St. François-Longchamp is ideal for skiing holidays with the entire family. The majority of the 103 slopes of the skiing region Grand Domaine with its gentle and broad slopes are easy to medium slopes – especially towards St. François. In addition there are several forest passages on the eastern side of Valmorel, which are ideal for beginners and pleasure skiers thanks to their gentle downhill slope. An exclusive area was created for beginners in the skiing region Grand Domaine, offering beginners best conditions for first experiments.

While the slopes underneath the 2.832 Meter high mountain peak of the Cheval Noir are also mainly easy to medium-hard level, Col du Gollet and Col du Mottet also offer ambitious tours for advanced and skiing professionals, like for example the slopes leaving the mountain station Cote 2305. Skiers that want more find a true athletic challenge also on the deep snow slopes on the steep slopes of the Lauzière-Massif or on the „Riondet“-slope on the Cheval Noir.

A total of 49 lifts in the skiing region Grand Domaine provide a relaxed skiing day without waiting times – snow is guaranteed from mid-December to Mid-April with more than 300 snow canons.

Regarding winter sports, a main thing in the skiing region Grand Domaine is cross-country skiing. The generous area around St. François-Longchamp not only offers 60 kilometres of wonderfully prepared trails, but also special highlights like the 15 kilometre long high altitude trail „Le Chaussy“, that has a reputation of being the hardest trail. The longest trail of the region boasts 20 kilometres and can be found by enthusiasts of this Nordic skiing sport in Valmorel.

The skiing region also provides everything for snowboarders, including a fully equipped snow park, the Funpark SnowZone at the T-bar lift Le Gollet with a 120-Meter-Halfpipe, many slides and jumps, a Funbox, Mini Quarter and snowskate, as well as a Boardercross-trail.

A special bonus for beginners is the only German ski school of the French Alps, the snow sports school Valmorel, which offers a versatile course program.

Already a shopping spree through the car-free city centre of Valmorel provides pure relaxation on your skiing holidays in Grand Domaine. Picturesque houses, small alleys and tiny marketplaces create a cosy atmosphere that one would hardly expect in a modern skiing village. Skiers also have a wide range of culinary highlights waiting for them here. While several cosy huts above Valmorels invite you to spend a relaxed lunch break, you can enjoy the afternoon sun in the numerous cafés with sun terraces in the city centre. After sundown, rustic pubs, bars and discotheques entice you to turn your night into day.

Ski vacationers are also spoilt for choice in the region Grand Domaine for leisure plans apart from the slopes. Next to 60 kilometres of prepared paths for winter and snowshoe hikers and Nordic walking fans, guests of all ages can enjoy ice-skating, sledding, snowscooter rides, horse and dog sledge rides, paragliding or even ice waterfall climbing in the skiing region Grand Domaine. And if you still have not had enough, you can go skiing on the night slope or try the night toboggan run.
