Mont Blanc – the original skiing region Mont-Blanc (1350-3840 m)

logo

The valley at the foot of Mont Blanc has been drawing enthusiastic winter athletes to its perfect snow and glacier landscape for nearly a century not only as a first class skiing region in front of the unique view of the Mont Blanc or as a hotspot for brave freeriders. Chamonix, the oldest Alpine skiing station that hosted the first Olympic winter games in 1924 is another highlight of the skiing region Mont Blanc. As a member of the exclusive club „classic mountain resorts“ and „Best of the Alps“, the largest station of the skiing region is popular not only in the winter sports season. The second travel period starts at the end of the skiing season in May when Chamonix turns into a Mecca for hikers and is famous as an ideal starting point for mountain hikes, climbing and glacier tours. The colourful visitor mixture of the world famous skiing region is supplemented by seminar participants and spa guests that also enjoy the combination of an original mountain village and sophisticated winter sports village. A slightly more relaxed skiing vacation is possible in the other stations of the region Mont Blanc. While you meet a younger, athletically active audience in Argentière, another mountain village with tradition, the more tranquil skiing villages Le Tour, Les Parz and Les Houches draw mainly families with their countryside flair.

Slope paradise for real professionals

On a total of 152 kilometres of slope on 74 downhills, the region Chamonix-Mont Blanc has the right measure for skiers on every level. And at altitudes from 1.030 to 3.842 meters on the glacier, ski vacationers do not have to worry about ideal snow conditions on the slope of the region Mont Blanc. An absolute Mecca is the skiing circuit, of which 90 percent of the slopes are located above 2.000 meters, and are mainly for ambitious and advanced skiers that come to the region Mont Blanc for the versatile slopes. Thus, the individual areas Aiguille du Midi, Col de Balme, La Flégère, le Brévent and Les Grands Montets that are joined to form a superb slope region, offer mainly medium-hard to difficult slopes, including several slope legends. Among them the probably most famous and one of the most beautiful slopes of the Alps, the famous „Vallée Blanche“, that leads down through the valley with the same name from the glacier Aiguille du Midi (3842m) on 20 kilometres, overcoming 2.800 meters in height. An incomparable skiing adventure that requires a mountain guide and starts already with the spectacular gondola trip to the peak and mastering of the narrow passage prior to putting on your skies. A further „slope star“, the famous „Les Grands Montets“, is one of the longest slopes of the skiing region; a real challenge is also the so-called Haute Route that goes from Chamonix through the Valais Alps all the way to Zermatt and invites ski tour fans to cross the unique landscape of the French and Swiss Alps for several days. Ambitious deep snow routes are located in the region of Brévent, whose extreme steep slopes make the hearts of freeriders beat faster.

Ideal areas to practice and for beginners and families can be found on the Southern slopes of the two mountains Le Brévent and La Flégère that are connected with each other (Flégère/Brévent Liaison). Not to forget the small skiing region Les Planards directly at the edge of the village Chamonix, that serves as a practice area for beginners as well as the wide skiing region Domain de Balme at the Northern end of the valley.

As wild and adventurous the slopes with their glacier ice and rocky passages present themselves on the Mont Blanc-side of the valley, the mountains to the North-west of the skiing region form the gentle opposite. An exciting contrast that is ideally connected. All skiing areas of the region stretching over three slopes can be reached by bus, tram or car. Beyond that, the ski pass Mont Blanc is also valid in the more remote stations Les Contamines, Megève, St. Gervais and in Courmayeur, Italy.

The great selection of freeride options is greatly valued by snowboarders, like for example the backcountry tours at the Brévent and at the Plan de l'Aiguille, the variant slopes from the Col de Balme and the powder snow slopes around the Grand Montes. Board acrobats can enjoy numerous funparks with various obstacles.

Cross country skiers can explore the picture book landscape of the skiing region Mont Blanc on 58 perfectly prepared trail kilometres, among other things on the circuit trail Chamonix – Argentière, the longest stretch of the region.

Small skiers are also most welcome in the region – and are well taken care of either in the skiing kindergarten, children’s skiing school, on the beginners lift „Le Savoy“ in Chamonix or on the family and beginner-friendly slopes La Vormaine, Les Chosalets and Les Planards.

Entertainment centre Chamonix

If you wish to enjoy the unique surroundings of the Mont Blanc in a little bit more relaxed state on a winter hike or Nordic Walk, you can choose from three panorama trails between Chamonix and Argentière and several high altitude tracks in the regions Les Montets, La Flégère and at Mer de Glace. A special entertainment offer is also the option to participate in a guided day tour, which you take on snowshoes at the foot of the glacier at an altitude of 2.000 meters.

The offer of Après-ski options is just as versatile. Especially in Chamonix there are approximately 100 restaurants, bars, discotheques, a cinema and a bowling track available for you to spend your evenings. During the day, a lot of boutiques and sports stores invite you to take a stroll.
